Affiliate marketing is a system of marketing in which merchant companies enter into contract with the websites of other companies.

By this method, companies can sell products or services to people who follow the links placed on affiliate websites back to their own website.

Affiliates gain passive income by placing advertisements of the merchants on their own websites.

Success depends on traffic volumes, good relationship building with clients, and good sales copy on the websites.

Marketing covers a broad area of business related principles and tools used by every company in the world.

Companies selling different kinds of products or services and those of different sizes may use different kinds of marketing models.

However, the marketing concepts used by all business enterprises are essentially the same.

There are several different kinds of marketing such as offline marketing, online marketing, viral marketing, network marketing, social media marketing, affiliate marketing, and so on.

Whatever is the kind of marketing used by a particular company, the goal is the same: to sell more products or services and improve sales revenues.

Thus, profit is the main objective for all business enterprises. Affiliate marketing, in particular, is a model that has been used extensively by many kinds of companies over the past decades.

An affiliate is actually a marketing associate or website contracted by the company. By engaging an affiliate, the company only wants to sell more of its products or services. However, affiliates also gain by way of certain rewards or incentives.

They are rewarded on the basis of their performances. When an affiliate succeeds in selling the company’s products through individual efforts, then only the company rewards the affiliate.

Any affiliate marketing system is made up of four key players viz., the merchant company whose products or services get sold, the publisher or the affiliate who brings in business for the company, the network which offers the affiliates certain incentives, and the customer who buys the product or service.

The affiliate network is an advanced electronic system that takes care of the incentives as well as the payments.

For this purpose, each affiliate is provided with an affiliate code. All sales due to a particular affiliate is counted under this code and paid accordingly.

The creation and development of advanced Internet systems like Web 2.0 have enabled the system of affiliate marketing to grow and prosper.

Most of the affiliate systems adopt a revenue sharing model for payments to affiliates. This is also known as the Pay-Per-Sale or PPS model. Another mode is the CPC or Cost-Per-Click model.

A third type is the CPA or Cost-Per-Action model. While the CPC model is mature and easy to implement, it has gradually been replaced with the PPS model owing to the high possibility of fraud associated with clicks.
